Part 2; Maniilaq's 'source of Intelligence.
Maniilaq ( Mu-knee-lyuk) was a quiet, gentle man who was a conscientious hunter and took good care of his family. He was much given to spending time alone whilst out hunting.

One day, whilst setting his traps, he thought that he heard a sound; the sound of softly expressed words; 'Taatagiik, taatagiik.'

Meaning 'Father and Son, Father and Son'.

He thought that they came from above him. maybe a bird.

Maniillaq heard these words on several occasions and discovered a special place where he would always be assured of hearing them. He did not understand the meaning of these gentle words, yet was drawn to his special place again and again, as though pulled by a delicate invisible magnet. When he listened to those sounds, he felt profound feelings of joy, peace, calm.

Then in time, he heard new words; 'Isrummisqusuqtik, isrummisqusuqtik.

Meaning;'Source of Intelligence, source of thought'.

Then; 'tell about me'.

Maniilaq spoke nothing of these words for some time; when he told his mother, she feared that he was becoming a shaman, but he told her that it was not the power of the shamans that was speaking to him; 'I do not believe that I am becoming a shaman; I cannot say that I am becoming anything.'

In time, Maniilaq began to speak to others in his community about what he had learned from his 'Source of Intellegence' ; little groups would gather to hear about the power of 'The Grandfather.'

Maniilaq took to carrying with him a wooden pole; on one day of each week, he would place an animal skin atop of it and would stay at home, doing no work. He said that one day of the week he would spend celebrating the great power of his Source of Information.

When the skin appeared on the pole, the people would gather in his hut to listen to his strange words. intrigued but equally disbelieving.

They heard how there would come a time when others would come to teach of the Grandfather's great power and love. Maniilaq told his audience;'He cares for us, he loves us and has always known us'.The place where he is 'shines bright, like the sun.'

He told how the love of the Grandfather was a far greater power than that of the shamans; that it was a good power that never punished people, that would never make them afraid.

( Coming in part2; Manillaq defies the Shamans and predicts the coming of the white man and 'ships that sail through the air.)
